Amazon SES versus an email platform: what the price comparison misses

Amazon SES is infrastructure. It accepts messages, authenticates domains, and reports delivery events. A usable email product also needs contacts, consent records, suppression, unsubscribe handling, templates, billing limits, operator review, and a way for non-engineers to work safely.

The right comparison is therefore not platform price minus SES price. It is platform price versus the engineering and operational cost of the layer you would otherwise own. That layer includes incident response when complaint rates rise, not just the happy-path API integration.

Raw SES is a strong choice when email is strategically important and your team wants that control. A platform is usually the better choice when the goal is to send reliable email without turning deliverability and abuse prevention into an internal product.
